Week 2: Personal Development Pathways

In todays lecture, Keith spoke of personal development pathways and introduced it with a picture of bacon and eggs, referring to ones commitment to a particular venture, the eggs denoted the chicken and its contribution to breakfast of some effort but not as wholly committed as the pig was in giving itself fully to the cause.

This transfers into most things as you have the choice as to how much you wish to give of yourself, will it be a toe dipped in the shallow end or a running bomb into waters unchartered?

The concept of a personal learning environment is empowering, allowing the student or athlete to excel
based on how much he/she wants to delve into the process. Any process needs to be guided by a teacher or coach, but the hunger that is displayed in the search for information and knowledge can only be beneficial for any long term goals.

Keith put links to various youtube clips as a way to express who he is or who he sees himself as in terms of songs and video clips, so I thought I'd give that a go as well.

Johnny Football Edition | Dude Perfect

Love sport, love that these guys are famous for loving sport! Here they catch up with the man of the moment Johnny Manziel.

Coach Carter

The turning point in one of my favourite movies, an excerpt from a Marianne Williamson poem. Touching to all who witness it.

Shawshank Redemption - Escape

The escape scene in what would have to be in anyones Top 10 movie list.

Troy Fernandez - Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World

This is a street performer from Waikiki that I stumbled upon whilst there, love this song and fitting because Somewhere Over The Rainbow was one of my grandmas favourite songs too.

Meet Neal Maddox

One of my favourite athletes from CrossFit. Shows what hard work and persistence brings. Also shows you can eat ice cream and donuts and still be ridiculously fit!

Just a glimpse of my likes, hard to elaborate as well as Keith did in the lecture but an effort nonetheless.

Back to the start. Week 1.

Going back to the beginning of the unit and starting with a tutorial before a lecture is always interesting. Not quite knowing what to expect from the lecturer or fellow students makes this a particularly fun scenario.
Even better it gets relocated to the gym and we play a sport that requires a ridiculous amount of skill; basketball.
I'm an avid fan of the game, but dribbling, passing and shooting can not be acquired from watching the likes of LeBron, Kobe and CP3 nor playing NBA2K13... But I, along with just about everyone else bar the incredibly gifted and those that actually play the sport plodded along with the game and I must say I did enjoy playing, it beats sitting down for an hour and a half!
Keith's interjections did not make being bad at basketball any more enjoyable, but it was lighthearted and if you can't laugh at yourself what's the point?

Moving on to the lecture, it was merely a brief introduction to what the unit will contain, but in addition to this Keith touched on a few current topics, most notably the subject of cheating in sport; the Lance Armstrong case and the drugs in the AFL and NRL respectively, more-so the role that coaches had in the handling of these particular situations, allowing it to continue or even orchestrating the rouse... It brought up a notion that Keith called 'dis-play', which I thought to be quite clever, and at the same time made me think of other situations where coaches had tried to bend the rules or simply flat out disregard them in order to obtain a competitive edge. Many instances in NCAA football came to mind (SMU 'Death Penalty', sanctions against USC and Reggie Bush losing his Heisman and recently the Penn State scandal), the salary cap sorts by the Melbourne Storm and the BALCO scandal also. These all had measures of dis-play, in some instances no coach had any control over matters, but by overseeing something not right take place on their watch sees their name tarnished, and questions are always asked.

I'll have a look at week 2 in my next post and look forward to week 3.

Intro...

Hi all, my name is Kieran, as you can deduce from the title of the blog.

This is an intro to my blog/e-portfolio as required by Mr Keith Lyons to pass his unit Sport Coaching Pedagogy. An interesting way to demonstrate evidence of regular and and continuous reporting of and reflection on involvement in the unit.

Each week I shall take points from Keith's lectures that I think to be important or interesting and try to put my spin on it or relate it to something that is relevant in the sporting culture of the times.

I look forward to the next 13 weeks of discovery and to reading all the other blogs as well.

To be continued...
